EUFASD 2024: FASD and Complex Trauma Research Presentation
Today Dr. Jack Purrington from our sister company Chrysalis Associates will be presenting at the EUFASD 2024 Conference in Madrid. He will be presenting research which explored the intervention model of Theraplay & Therapeutic Parenting & A Sensory Component (ALERT Program Informed) for pre natal alcohol exposed children vs non pre natal alcohol exposed children. Prof Raja Mukherjee is chairing the breakout session and is also an affiliate on the research.
“We found that children make positive changes regardless of their alcohol exposure during gestation which is the first paper of its kind to find this. It goes against current understanding which is very interesting as previous research suggested that when a child has both post-natal trauma and pre-natal alcohol, interventions that look at the impact of the alcohol exposure may be more impactful (more so than trauma focused interventions), however I wonder whether previous studies missed out the importance of the key attachment relationship as an additional factor which is paramount in reducing a child’s distress. Having said this, speaking with parents and carers with children with FASD, lived experiences tell us that interventions that focus solely on the attachment relationship and ignore FASD presentations are experienced as equally ineffective. In this new approach to intervention we bring together a models that focus on FASD and Trauma and Attachment! Leaving nothing out to support the whole child and the family!”
At Chrysalis we are proud to be a part of a community of innovation and forward thinking. Research is critical for working with trauma and attachment because it provides a foundation for effective, evidence-based interventions, guides treatment approaches, and deepens understanding of complex psychological processes.
